Handicap Access Bathroom Door, Shower and Tub Design Tips

Most any normal sized bathroom can be converted to easily accommodate those that may have disabilities or require the use of a wheelchair. Working with a qualified bathroom renovation expert will help in making modifications to your bathroom and to avoid injury.

The first area that will need modification is the doorway. Doors on most bathrooms can be modified for wheelchair and walker access. Standard doors according to most local bathroom building codes are 32". In order to accommodate a wheelchair or walker you will need at least a 36" door or should you have the room, a 42" door is ideal. If you choose to utilize a swing door that will help increase the opening by 2".

Bathtubs can be difficult to negotiate for those that may have a handicap or disability. Most difficult is transferring from a wheelchair to a bathtub. Your bathroom designer can carefully design the bathtub area to provide the maximum amount of safety. Make certain to ask your bathroom renovation expert about tub transfer seats which allow you to sit in the tub and take a bath or shower without having to completely immerse yourself into the tub.

Should you find it difficult to utilize a bathtub consider a shower. Once again a qualified bathroom designer can help design a shower that will accommodate your handicap. For those whose handicap limits the use of a walker and a wheelchair is necessary ask your bathroom designer about a roll-in shower. There are many models and designs to choose from including those that provide shower jets found in standard shower and bathtub units.
